Back at it again

Every few years, I get the motivation to write again. Every time I do it I swear I'll be consistent. Maybe this is the one. I have had many attempts at maintaining a blog, all the way back to elementary school when I first got my blogspot site. I've always liked writing, but perhaps not enough to be persistent at it without any external motivation - for example... any indication of people reading, so please subscribe to my newsletter ;)

Why I'm writing

I started doing photography seriously in 2024. At the same time, I also started a YouTube channel. The purpose of the channel was to document my journey of mastering photography. And I also wanted to build myself an audience. However, I the weekly video making turned into the main thing that I'm focusing on. I realised that I rather focus on the photography side of things.

I started focusing on submitting to photography open calls. I learned how to shoot film, develop it, and also scan the film myself. I read about photography, watch more videos, documentaries, and movies. I even went to a 'A History of Photography' short course by the National Gallery of Victoria. It was just a three 3 hour session course, but it was really interesting!

Ok, so what now? Well, after stepping aside from documenting my journey for a while, I do miss it. I can feel the benefit of externally talking about what I'm learning. Forcing myself to do it weekly also helped. There was no "choice", I just do it. So now, I'm going to write every week about it instead. It's not nearly as intense as video making. It's probably less discoverable as well. But, much more easier to produce. Moreover, I find it more retrospective, because it's purely words that I type without thinking too much about the presentation. The same can't be said about the way I made my videos.

What I'm writing

You can expect candid writing about the photography related 'stuff'' that I did for the week. It can be photo walks that I did, meet ups that I went to, books that I read, videos that I found interesting, or just a thought and idea that came out of (over)thinking about photography. All of that in my pursuit of being a pro artist - meaning someone who can make a living out of their art. In my case, the art forms that I imagine selling are photo books and prints. There's probably more out there!

I think I'd find a newsletter like that interesting! So I'm writing one for budding artists out there. Or maybe someone that already made it and just wants to follow along. Or maybe an artist in a different art form.
