The story of two artists in Iran that just wants to express themselves through their art but unable to do so properly due to their acts being illegal. It has all the good stuff, the fight against oppression, the spirit of humanity, and the unquenchable thirst of the arts.
The intro goes strong by immediately starting with a narration, like a children’s book “once upon a time…”, and we get to see the silliness of the two main characters right away. A montage of their life on the island sets the tone of film.
This film is one of the more light hearted choices for me this year. It’s a romantic comedy and the synopsis reminds me of the recent A24 film ‘Eternity’, where a person needs to choose between two people.
‘Yesterday the Eye Didn’t Sleep’ is a film with a good story, great storytelling, and very interesting cinematography. I felt like it was built like a short film. It has compressed storytelling and they used the “extra runtime” really well by making each shot meaningfully more cinematic.
The film follows the life of a girl, from a kid to adolescence. It has time skips and sort of chapters, though the chapters are not the same length. The pacing feels so well done, not too fast and not too slow. No part of the story over welcomed their stay, even with the deliberate cinematic style.

I feel like I just find them neat: packing a narrative in such a compact space whilst still be interesting. The short films are even more interesting by the way they need to be efficient in introducing characters, establishing the context, and wrap up the conclusion.

The title is pretty verbose, kindly describing that there will two tales going at once. But the way it's told is not verbose at all, the intermingling between "fiction" and "reality" (in the movie universe) is done a satisfying way.
As per its title, this movie uses Super 8 footage, which is a film video format that was meant for amateur home movies. The format is what intrigued me, having used many rolls of 35mm for photos.
I chose to watch this movie from the synopsis. It looks like the kind of drama/thriller that I like. To describe my taste, I quite enjoy Black Mirror although I’d be okay if some episodes are less gory. I don’t like thrillers that use jump scares to be entertaining.
The first thing that drew me into 'The Man I Love' is Rami Malek. I'm a fan of his acting in 'Mr Robot' and in 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' The synopsis was intriguing as well, set in New York in the 1980s about a theatre artist HIV-positive man.
